How to build a better grip

The grip is where every good shot starts. Here is how to set the club in your fingers and square your hands for cleaner strikes.

For me, the grip is the most important part of the golf swing. Without a good grip it is far harder to hit good shots. A grip that sits too much in the palms, or is simply too weak, is one of the most common faults I see.

Get the club into your fingers

The single most important thing is that the grip runs through your fingers, not your palm. Think about grabbing something heavy off the ground and lifting it up. That is the feeling you are after. A simple way to nail it is to make a little hook with your fingers, hook the grip into them, and then close your hand around it. Do exactly the same with your right hand: hook it into the fingers, slide down until it meets the other hand, and close it over the top.

Choose how you join your hands

From there you have three options. You can leave both hands as they are and simply close them. You can lift your right pinky and overlap it so the ring finger sits up against your left index finger. Or you can interlock the two fingers. Pick whichever feels most secure and repeatable for you.

Check your work

To make sure it is a good grip, extend your arms in front of you. The club should point either straight up or ever so slightly to the left. Get that, and you will find it far easier to flush your shots. Good luck practicing.
